How Do Barcodes Work?
Barcodes are created with coded information which is seen by the different patterns of white and black stripes that we typically think of when we see a barcode on a product label or anywhere else. While the distinct information coded can be specific to each company, it will also typically have a code for the country where the product was made, the manufacturer, and the exact product itself. It’s a seamless way to keep track of inventory as it makes its way through the factory floor and transportation all the way to the business and eventually the consumer.
There are two types of barcodes which are 1-dimensional (1D) and 2-dimensional (2D). 1D barcodes include details on product type, size, and color. 2D barcodes can include details on price, inventory levels, and product images.
This is also part of a UPC (universal product code) which includes the barcodes as well as a 12-digit number which are broken into a 6-digit identification number, 5-digit product number, and 1-digit check digit.
Why Used Barcodes?
With all of the different elements that are included in barcodes and UPCs, here are some reasons why they are beneficial to managing your product flow and inventory:
- Better sales accuracy
- Fewer training requirements
- Real-time data management
- Low implementation cost
