Pill bottle labels are an essential part of patient communication. They list the patient’s name; the drug name, dosage information, any warnings or contraindications of note; and the pharmacy’s contact details. Without all of this information, getting prescriptions into the hands of the right customers would be all but impossible. It only makes sense, then, to make sure your prescription labels are working most effectively for both your patients and your pharmacy. To that end, our team at Chicago Color Label shares what you need to know about pill bottle labels.
Prescription Drug Labels
When you print your pill bottle labels in-house, you can choose the design, label material, and size best suited to the job. Bear in mind that all prescription labels should stick securely to their bottles and be made of waterproof materials. A printer designed for pharmacy labels makes it easy to design and print labels on demand and adjust templates as needed to update patient, regulatory, or pharmacy information.
Pharmacies aren’t the only businesses that fill prescriptions.. Medical clinics, veterinarians’ offices, and animal hospitals also often need to print pill bottle labels. The right prescription label printer can be put to excellent use in any of these settings.
Adhesive Requirements
When printing labels for your pill bottles, it’s important to consider the type of adhesive that’s on your media. Pill bottles come in many different sizes. Smaller pill bottles have a smaller radius. This can result in your label pulling away from the bottle surface to assume its normally flat shape if the radius is small and your adhesive is not strong enough to hold onto the bottle surface.
Sometimes, the surface of the bottle itself can contribute to the label pealing away on its own as well. Smoother or “slick” surfaces can result in the edge of your label peeling away from the bottle. In these cases, we recommend a high tack (or “aggressive” adhesive) to ensure your media stays fixed to the pill bottle properly.
You can request a free media sample from us in order to test the media on your pill bottles prior to purchasing them in larger amounts.
Resolution/Text Clarity
Something important to consider when printing labels for pill bottles is Resolution/Text Clarity. Printing on pill bottles requires very fine text, which means you’ll need a printer with higher print resolution. Here are some of the highest-resolution printers that you can purchase from Chicago Color Label:
- Epson Printers
- VIP series printers (VP500-VP700)
- Afinia L701, L801 and L901 series printers
Media Types
When printing on pharmacy labels, the type of media that you choose can affect quality and durability. There can be a relationship to text clarity, as different media types absorb the inks from our printers differently. When printing very fine text, there may be more blurring with paper media because the fibers in the media will allow the inks to spread out a tiny fraction more than synthetic materials like BOPP or PET media. Customers may find that they have the best results from printing with a higher resolution printer (mentioned above) on these subtrates. Synthetic media also tends to be much more durable for abrasion. Testing is key!
Choosing a Pill Bottle Label Printer
At Chicago Color Label, we offer a variety of prescription label printers for businesses of all sizes. Most of our machines are extremely versatile and can be used for other printing needs beyond pill bottle labels. Some of the most popular printers for pill bottle label printing are the Afinia L701-L901 series as well as the VIP series printers. These will produce the highest resolution printing at 1600×1600; as opposed to a maximum resolution of 1200×1200 on the Epson.
Don’t forget that the printing materials you use are just as critical as your prescription label printer. Check out our blank label rolls and ink cartridges, designed for high-quality print results that your customers will appreciate.
